Chapter 1 focuses on means of character’s personalizing in fiction works, addresses ideas of the role of speech in character’s image creation, its functions and peculiarities, and emphasizes the importance of stylistic devices in character’s personalizing by means of speech. It was established that the personality of fiction personage represents the complex of things selected and converted by the author. The techniques of character’s personalizing are complex. Between the artistical means of character’s personalizing the most prevalent are the character’s speech (or character’s discourse), mutual characteristic, author’s characteristic, portrait, and landscape. Audio-visual texts also make use of vocal emphasis and the tone of voice, along with such non-verbal forms of expression as physical gesture, facial expression, and even music and dance.
It were explained how the character’s speech shows their personal life experience, state of mind, spirits, and temper, and how the analysis of the speech can provide us with information about the character’s social status, education, occupation, etc.
Two kinds of the means of characters’ speech creation were determined – lexical and stylistic. Lexical means include: special markers or catchphrases, filler words, jokes and humorous sayings, aaphorisms, paradoxicality in speech, purity of speech, slang, obsolete words, terms, barbarisms and foreignisms, diminutive forms of words, circumlocutions, etc.
Stylistic devices of character’s personalizing include metaphor, allusion, irony, rhetorical questions, antonomasia, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, pun, Repetition, etc. They are used to add figurativeness to speech, create humorous effect, to highlight certain feature of the character, etc.
In Chapter 2 stylistic peculiarities of characters’ personalizing in the “Cars” film series are identified. It was determined that there exist some general features common for all characters. First of all here belong car terms (the names of cars, car parts, accessories, etc.) and racing terms. These terms make the world of anthropomorphic vehicles seem real and plausible from the one hand, and unique and recognizable from the other. Very often these terms substitute similar concepts from real world, which makes the image of the Cars’ world even more real and create some humorous effect. These substitutions are mostly formed by means of allusion and metaphor.
Also the most distinctive features of the main characters are defined. For McQueen it is catchphrases created by means of onomatopoeia; irony and sarcasm towards his opponents; exaggeration of his own abilities and skills by means of hyperbole. The most relevant peculiarities of Mater’s image are catchphrases, which reflect his social status and lack of education; highly colloquial speech and various language mistakes (slang, misspelled words, incorrect syntax, etc.). He is silly and funny, but optimistic person. These features are often shown in different comic situations created by the use of pun, morphemic repetition or rhyme. Sally is notable for her education, esprit, and intelligence. These traits are expressed in her speech by the means of various stylistic devices (rhetorical questions, metaphors, personifications, repetitions, etc.).
Supporting characters in the film are also highly personalized. The most distinctive of their traits is that the place of manufacturing is reflected in cars’ speech. This device makes the world of anthropomorphic cars more similar to the human’s one, makes it seem more real and plausible. At the other hand, it creates some humorous effect and adds figurativeness to the whole film.
Unfortunately the format of the work does not allow to fully explore the topic; thus the further studies in the field of stylistic peculiarities of characters’ personalizing are needed.
